----Amos

AMOS

The Minor Prophets:
Amos 1

AMOS (meaning in Hebrew "a burden") was from Tekoa, a small town of Judah, six miles southeast from Beth-lehem, and twelve from Jerusalem, on the borders of the great desert. Amos therefore owned and tended flocks, and collected sycamore figs.
Though belonging to Judah, he was commissioned by GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) to exercise his prophetical function in Israel; as the latter kingdom abounded in impostors, and the prophets of GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) generally fled to Judah through fear of the kings of Israel, a true prophet from Judah was the more needed in it. His name is not to be confounded with that of Isaiah's father, Amoz. The time of his prophesying was in the reigns of Uzziah king of Judea, and Jeroboam II, son of Joash, king of Israel He was contemporary with Hosea, only that the latter continued to prophesy in reigns subsequent to Uzziah ( Hosea 1:1 in the reign of that monarch. The scene of his ministry was Beth-el, where the idol calves were set up ( Amos 7:10-13 roused Amaziah, the idol priest, to accuse him of conspiracy and to try to drive him back to Judah.

1 These are the words of Amos, a shepherd from the town of Tekoa in Judah. He received this message two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam II, the son of Jehoash, was king of Israel.
The words of Amos--that is, Amos' oracular communications. A heading found only in Jeremiah 1:1 .
two years before the earthquake--mentioned in Zechariah 14:5

2 And he said: The LORD (Jesus) roars from {His Temple} on Mt. Zion, And utters His voice from Jerusalem; The pastures of the shepherds mourn, And the top of Carmel is dried up.

3 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: Because Damascus has committed three sins, and now a fourth sin, I will not change my plans. The Arameans have crushed [the people of] Gilead with iron-spiked threshing sledges.
Here begins a series of threatenings of vengeance against six other states, followed by one against Judah, and ending with one against Israel, with whom the rest of the prophecy is occupied. The eight predictions are in symmetrical stanzas, each prefaced by "Thus saith the Lord." Beginning with the sin of others, which Israel would be ready enough to recognize, he proceeds to bring home to Israel her own guilt. Israel must not think hereafter, because she sees others visited similarly to herself, that such judgments are matters of chance; nay, they are divinely foreseen and foreordered, and are confirmations of the truth that God will not clear the guilty. If God spares not the nations that know not the truth, how much less Israel that sins wilfully ( Luke 12:47 Luke 12:48 , 4:17 )!
If Damascus had only sinned once or twice, I would have spared them, but since, after having been so often pardoned, they still persevere so continually, I will no longer "turn away" their punishment. The Hebrew is simply, "I will not reverse it," namely, the sentence of punishment which follows; the negative expression implies more than it expresses; that is, "I will most surely execute it"; God's fulfilment of His threats being more awful than human language can express.
4 So I will send down fire on King Hazael's palace, and the fortresses of King Ben-hadad will be destroyed.

5 I will break down the gates of Damascus and slaughter its people all the way to the valley of Aven. I will destroy the ruler in Beth-eden, and the people of Aram will return to Kir as slaves. I, the LORD (Jesus), have spoken!

6 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: Because Gaza has committed three sins, and now a fourth sins, I will not change my plans. The Philistines have taken all the people captive in order to hand them over to the Edomites.

7 I will send a fire on the walls of Gaza and burn down its palaces.

8 I will cut off those living in Ashdod and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn my power against Ekron. The rest of the Philistines will die, says I, the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God)

9 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: Because Tyre has committed three sins, and now a fourth sin, I will not change my plans. The Tyrians have handed all the people over to the Edomites. The Tyrians didn't remember their treaty with their relatives.

10 I will send a fire on the walls of Tyre and burn down its palaces.

11 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: Because Edom has committed three sins, and now a fourth sins, I will not change my plans. The Edomites pursued their relatives with swords. They refused to show any compassion to them. Their anger was unstoppable. They refused to control their fury.

12 I will send a fire on Teman and burn down the palaces of Bozrah.

13 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: Because Ammon has committed three sins, and now a fourth sin, I will not change my plans. The Ammonites enlarged their territory by ripping open pregnant women in Gilead.

14 I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah and burn down its palaces while troops are shouting on the day of battle and winds are howling on the day of the storm.

15 Their king will go into captivity along with his officials. I, the LORD (Jesus) has spoken!
There shall be abundant Divine influences, and the gospel will spread speedily into the remotest corners of the earth. These events are predicted under significant emblems; there is a day coming, when every thing amiss shall be amended. The fountain of this plenty is in the house of God, whence the streams take rise. Christ is this Fountain; his sufferings, merit, and grace, cleanse, refresh, and make fruitful. Gospel grace, flowing from Christ, shall reach to the Gentile world, to the most remote regions, and make them abound in fruits of righteousness; and from the house of the Lord above, from his heavenly temple, flows all the good we daily taste, and hope to enjoy eternally. Matthew Henry

Amos 2

1 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: Because Moab has committed three sins, and now a fourth sin, I will not change my plans. The Moabites have cremated Edom's king.

2 So I will send down fire on the land of Moab, and all the fortresses in Kerioth will be destroyed. The people will fall in the noise of battle, as the warriors shout and the trumpets blare.

3 And I will destroy their king and slaughter all their princes. I, the LORD (Jesus) has said this.

4 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: Because Judah has committed three sins, and now a fourth sin, I will not change my plans. The people of Judah have rejected the LORD (Jesus)'s Law(torah) and haven't kept His Commandments. They have been led astray by false teachings, the same ones their ancestors followed.

5 I will send a fire on Judah and burn down the palaces of Jerusalem.

6 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: Because Israel has committed three sins, and now a fourth sin, I will not change my plans. The people of Israel sell the righteous for money and the needy for a pair of sandals.

7 They trample My helpless people in the dust and deny justice to those who are oppressed. Both father and son sleep with the same woman, corrupting My Holy Name.

8 At their religious festivals, they lounge around in clothing stolen from their debtors. In the house of their GOD (Elohim-The Family of God), they present offerings of wine purchased with stolen money.

9 I destroyed the Amorites in front of them, although the Amorites were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks. I destroyed their fruit above the ground and their roots below it.

10 I brought you out of Egypt. I led you through the desert for 40 years so that you could take possession of the land of the Amorites.

11 I also sent you prophets from among your children and Nazirites from among your youths. Isn't that so, people of Israel? The LORD (Jesus) has declared this.

12 You made the Nazirites drink wine. You commanded the prophets to stop prophesying.

13 I am going to crush you as an overloaded wagon crushes a person.

14 Your fastest runners will not get away. The strongest among you will become weak. Even the mightiest warriors will be unable to save themselves.

15 Archers will not stand their ground. Fast runners will not be able to escape. Horsemen will not be able to save themselves.

16 Brave soldiers will run away naked that day. I, the LORD (Jesus) has declared this.

Amos 3
1 Hear this word that the LORD (Jesus) has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying:
children of Israel--not merely the ten tribes, but "the whole family brought up from Egypt...all the descendants of Jacob, including Judah and Benjamin. Compare Jeremiah 8:3 , and Micah 2:3 , on "family" for the nation However, as the prophecy following refers to the ten tribes, they must be chiefly, if not solely, meant: they were the majority of the nation; and so Amos concedes what they so often boasted, that they were the elect people of God [CALVIN]

2 Out of all the families on earth, I have known no one else but you. That is why I am going to punish you for all your sins.
I will punish--the greater the privileges, the heavier the punishment for the abuse of them; for to the other offenses there is added, in this case, ingratitude. When God's people do not glorify Him, He glorifies Himself by punishing them.

3 Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?
The prophets, and all servants of God, can have no fellowship with the ungodly ( Psalms 119:63 , 2 Corinthians 6:16 2 Corinthians 6:17 , Ephesians 5:11 , 4:4 ).

4 Does a lion roar in the forest if it has no prey? Does a young lion growl in its den unless it has caught something?

5 Does a bird land in a trap on the ground if there's no bait in it? Does a trap spring up from the ground unless it has caught something?

6 If a shofar (horn) sounds an alarm in a city, won't the people be alarmed? If there is a disaster in a city, hasn't the LORD (Jesus) done it?
When the sound of alarm is trumpeted by the watchman in the city, the people are sure to run to and fro in alarm (Hebrew, literally). Yet Israel is not alarmed, though God threatens judgments.
shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it?--This is the explanation of the preceding similes: God is the Author of all the calamities which come upon you, and which are foretold by His prophets. The evil of sin is from ourselves; the evil of trouble is from God, whoever be the instruments.

God(Elohim/Theos) ALWAYS TELLS HIS PLANS TO HIS PROPHETS FIRST:
7 Surely the LORD (Jesus) God(Elohim/Theos) does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.

8 A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The LORD (Jesus) God(Elohim/Theos) has spoken! Who can but prophesy?

9 Announce this to the leaders of Philistia and Egypt: "Take your seats now on the hills around Samaria, and witness the scandalous spectacle of all Israel's crimes."

10 Those who collect profits in their palaces through violent and destructive acts don't know how to do what is right, says the LORD (Jesus).

11 This is what the Almighty LORD (Jesus) says: An enemy will surround your land, strip you of your defenses, and loot your palaces.

12 This is what the LORD (Jesus) says: As a shepherd rescues two legs or a piece of an ear out of a lion's mouth, so the Israelites living in Samaria will be rescued, [having only] a corner of a bed or a piece of a couch.

DUALITY of YAHWEH:
13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob, Says the LORD (Jesus) God(Yahweh), the God(Elohim/Theos) of hosts,
Notice that LORD GOD in English is really LORD LORD, Yahweh-Yahweh! This shows the duality of the word Yahweh! The LORD(Jesus) od the Yahweh Family! Or Yahweh Yahweh! It is correct to translate LORD God- Or Jesus is God!

14 On the very day I punish Israel for its sins, I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel. The horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.

15 And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy -- their winter mansions and their summer houses, too -- all their palaces filled with ivory. I, the LORD (Jesus) have spoken!

Amos 4
1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, Who oppress the poor, Who crush the needy, Who say to your husbands, "Bring wine, let us drink!"

2 The LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) has sworn by His holiness: The time will come when you will be led away with hooks in your noses. Every last one of you will be dragged away like a fish on a hook!

3 You will leave by going straight through the breaks in the wall; you will be thrown from your fortresses. I, the LORD (Jesus) has spoken.

4 Go ahead and offer your sacrifices to the idols at Bethel and Gilgal. Keep on disobeying -- your sins are mounting up! Offer sacrifices each morning and bring your tithes every three days!

5 Present your bread made with yeast as an offering of thanksgiving. Then give your extra voluntary offerings so you can brag about it everywhere! This is the kind of thing you Israelites love to do," says the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God).

6 I brought hunger to every city and famine to every town. But still you wouldn't return to me, Says the LORD (Jesus).

7 I also withheld rain from you, When there were still three months to the harvest. I made it rain on one city, I withheld rain from another city. One part was rained upon, And where it did not rain the part withered.

8 So two or three cities wandered from one town to another for a drink of water, but there was never enough. But still you wouldn't return to Me," Says the LORD (Jesus).

9 I struck your farms and vineyards with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured all your fig and olive trees. But still you wouldn't return to Me," says the LORD (Jesus).

10 I sent plagues against you like the plagues I sent against Egypt long ago. I killed your young men in war and slaughtered all your horses. The stench of death filled the air! But still you wouldn't return to Me," says the LORD (Jesus).

11 I destroyed some of your cities, as I destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Those of you who survived were like half-burned sticks snatched from a fire. But still you wouldn't return to Me," Says the LORD (Jesus).

12 Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your GOD (Elohim-The Family of God), O Israel!"

13 For behold, He who forms mountains, And creates the wind, Who declares to man what his thought is, And He turns the light of dawn into darkness and treads the mountains under his feet -- The LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) of hosts is His name.

Amos 5
1 Hear this word which I take up against you, a lamentation, O house of Israel:

2 The virgin Israel has fallen, never to rise again! She lies forsaken on the ground, with none to raise her up.

3 For thus says the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God): The city that goes out by a thousand Shall have a hundred left, And that which goes out by a hundred Shall have ten left to the house of Israel.

SEEK ME and LIVE!
4 For thus says the LORD (Jesus) to the house of Israel: "Seek Me and live;

5 Don't go to worship the idols of Bethel, Gilgal, or Beersheba. For the people of Gilgal will be dragged off into exile, and the people of Bethel will come to nothing.

6 Seek the LORD (Jesus) and live, If you don't, He break out like fire in the house of Joseph, And devour it, With no one to quench it in Bethel--

7 You who turn justice to wormwood, And lay righteousness to rest in the earth!
Wormwood: Radiation see note Revelation: 8:11
8 He created the stars, the Pleiades and Orion. It is he who turns darkness into morning and day into night. It is He who draws up water from the oceans and pours it down as rain on the land. The LORD (Jesus) is His name.

9 He rains ruin upon the strong, So that fury comes upon the fortress.

10 How they hate honest judges! How they despise people who tell the truth!

11 Therefore, because you tread down the poor And take grain taxes from him, Though you have built houses of hewn stone, Yet you shall not dwell in them; You have planted pleasant vineyards, But you shall not drink wine from them.

12 For I know your manifold transgressions And your mighty sins: Afflicting the just and taking bribes; Diverting the poor from justice at the gate.

13 Therefore the prudent keep silent at that time, For it is an evil time.

14 Seek good and not evil, That you may live; So the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) of hosts will be with you, As you have spoken.

15 Hate evil, love good; Establish justice in your courts. It may be that the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

16 Therefore the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) of hosts, the LORD (Jesus), says this: There will be crying in all the public squares and in every street. Call for the farmers to weep with you, and summon professional mourners to wail and lament.
the Lord—JEHOVAH- YAHWEH.
the God of hosts, the Lord--an accumulation of titles, of which His lordship over all things is the climax, to mark that from His judgment there is no appeal.

17 In all vineyards there shall be wailing, For I will pass through you," Says the LORD (Jesus).

WOE to those looking for the End times!
18. Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD (Jesus)! For what good is the day of the LORD (Jesus) to you? It will be darkness, and not light.

19 In that day you will be like a man who runs from a lion -- only to meet a bear. After escaping the bear, he leans his hand against a wall in his house -- and is bitten by a snake.

20 Yes, the day of the LORD (Jesus) will be a dark and hopeless day, without a ray of joy or hope.

21 I hate, I despise your feast days, And I do not savor your sacred assemblies.
The two verbs joined without a conjunction express God's strong abhorrence.
your feast days--yours; not Mine; I do not acknowledge them: unlike those in Judah, yours are of human, not divine institution. This is not talking about Passover and the true Holy Days, but Christmas, Easter and the pagan Sunday worshipping! See VERSE 26!
22 Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them, Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings.

23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs, For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.

24 But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream.

NO SACFRICES DURING THE 40 YEARS!
25 Did you offer Me sacrifices and offerings In the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
Those 40 years of wandering represents our day today, before the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ! The Law is not abolished, but some of it has been suspended!

26 No, your real interest was in your pagan gods -- Sakkuth your king god and Kaiwan your star god -- the images you yourselves made.
"Molech" means "king" answering to Mars [BENGEL]; the Sun [JABLONSKI] The God that we worship today is Molech- THE SUN GOD. SUNDAY is his day!

27 Therefore I will send you into captivity beyond Damascus, Says the LORD (Jesus), whose name is the GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) of hosts.

Amos 6
1 Woe to you who are at ease in church(Zion), And trust in Mount Samaria, Notable persons in the chief nation, To whom the house of Israel comes!

2 Go over to Calneh and see what happened there. Then go to the great city of Hamath and on down to the Philistine city of Gath. You are no better than they were, and look at how they were destroyed.

3 Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near;

4 How terrible it will be for you who sprawl on ivory beds surrounded with luxury, eating the meat of tender lambs and choice calves.

5 You sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and you fancy yourselves to be great musicians, as King David was.

6 You drink wine by the bowlful, and you perfume yourselves with exotic fragrances, caring nothing at all that your nation is going to ruin.

7 Therefore, you will be the first to be led away as captives. Suddenly, all your revelry will end.

8 The LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) has sworn by Himself, The LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) of hosts says: I abhor the pride of Jacob, And hate his palaces; Therefore I will deliver up the city And all that is in it.

9 Then it shall come to pass, that if ten men remain in one house, they shall die.

10 And when a close relative -- one who is responsible for burning the dead -- goes into the house to carry away a dead body, he will ask the last survivor, "Is there anyone else with you?" And the person will answer, "No!" Then he will say, "Hush! Don't even whisper the name of the LORD (Jesus).

11 For behold, when the LORD (Jesus) gives a command: homes both great and small will be smashed to pieces.

12 Can horses gallop over rocks? Can oxen be used to plow rocks? Stupid even to ask -- but that's how stupid you are when you turn justice into poison and make bitter the sweet fruit of righteousness.

13 And just as stupid is this bragging about your conquest of Lo-debar. You boast, "Didn't we take Karnaim by our own strength and power?

14 But, behold, I am about to bring an enemy nation against you, says the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) of hosts; And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath To the Valley of the Arabah.

Amos 7
1 Thus the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) showed me a vision. I saw him preparing to send a vast swarm of locusts over the land. This was after the king's share had been harvested from the fields and as the main crop was coming up.

2 In my vision the locusts ate everything in sight that was green. Then I said, "O LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God), please forgive your people! Unless you relent, Israel will not survive, for we are only a small nation."

3 So the LORD (Jesus) relented concerning this. "It shall not be," said the LORD (Jesus).

4 Thus the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) showed me another vision: Behold, the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) was calling for judgment by fire; it dried up the great deep and devoured the land.

5 Then I said: "O LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God), cease, I pray! Oh, that Jacob may survive, He is too small!"

6 So the LORD (Jesus) relented concerning this. "This also shall not be," said the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God).

7 Thus He showed me: Behold, the LORD (Jesus) stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand.

8 And the LORD (Jesus) said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the LORD (Jesus) said: "Behold, I am setting a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore.

9 The high places of Isaac shall be desolate, And the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste. I will rise with the sword against the house of Jeroboam."

10 But when Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, heard what Amos was saying, he rushed a message to King Jeroboam: "Amos is hatching a plot against you right here on your very doorstep! What he is saying is intolerable. It will lead to rebellion all across the land.

11 For thus Amos has said: Jeroboam will soon be killed and the people of Israel will be sent away into exile.'"

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos: "Go, get out of here you seer! Flee to the land of Judah. There eat bread, And there prophesy.

13 But never again prophesy at Bethel, For it is the king's sanctuary, And it is the royal residence."

14 Then Amos answered, and said to Amaziah: "I was no prophet, Nor was I a son of a prophet, But I was a sheepbreeder And a tender of sycamore fruit.

15 Then the LORD (Jesus) took me as I followed the flock, And the LORD (Jesus) said to me, 'Go, prophesy to My people Israel.'

16 Now therefore, hear the word of the LORD (Jesus): You say, 'Do not prophesy against Israel, And do not spout against the house of Isaac.'

17 Therefore thus says the LORD (Jesus): 'Your wife shall be a harlot in the city; Your sons and daughters shall fall by the sword; Your land shall be divided by survey line; You shall die in a defiled land; And Israel shall surely be led away captive From his own land.'

Amos 8
1 Thus the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) showed me: In it I saw a basket filled with ripe fruit.

2 And He said, "Amos, what do you see?" So I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD (Jesus) said to me: "The end has come upon My people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore.

3 And the songs of the temple Shall be wailing in that day," Says the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God)-- "Many dead bodies everywhere, They shall be thrown out in silence."

4 Listen to this, you who rob the poor and trample the needy!

5 You can't wait for the Sabbath day to be over and the religious festivals to end so you can get back to cheating the helpless. You measure out your grain in false measures and weigh it out on dishonest scales.

6 And you mix the wheat you sell with chaff swept from the floor! Then you enslave poor people for a debt of one piece of silver or a pair of sandals.

7 The LORD (Jesus) has sworn by an oath to Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their works.

8 The earth will tremble for your deeds, and everyone will mourn. The land will rise up like the Nile River at floodtime, toss about, and sink again.

9 And it shall come to pass in that day, says the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God), That I will make the sun go down at noon, And I will darken the earth in broad daylight;

10 I will turn your celebrations into times of mourning, and your songs of joy will be turned to weeping. You will wear funeral clothes and shave your heads as signs of sorrow, as if your only son had died. How very bitter that day will be!

11 Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God), That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But a famine of hearing the words of the LORD (Jesus).

12 They shall wander from sea to sea, And from north to east; They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD (Jesus), But shall not find it.

13 In that day the fair virgins And strong young men Shall faint from thirst.

14 And those who worship and swear by the idols of Samaria, Dan, and Beersheba will fall down, never to rise again."

Amos 9
END TIMES-MILLENNIUM-RESTORATION OF KING DAVID:
1 I saw the LORD (Jesus) standing by the altar, and He said: Strike the tops of the Temple columns so hard that the foundation will shake. Smash the columns so the roof will crash down on the people below. Then those who survive will be slaughtered in battle. No one will escape!

2 Even if they dig down to sheol(a deep grave), I will reach down and pull them up. Even if they climb up into the heavens, I will bring them down.

3 Even if they hide at the very top of Mount Carmel, I will search them out and capture them. Even if they hide at the bottom of the ocean, I will send the great sea serpent after them to bite and destroy them.

4 Even if they are driven into exile, I will command the sword to kill them there. I am determined to bring disaster upon them and not to help them.

5 The LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) of hosts, touches the land and it melts, and all its people mourn. The ground rises like the Nile River at floodtime, and then it sinks again.

6 HIS upper stories of His home are in the heavens, while its foundation is on the earth. He draws up water from the oceans and pours it down as rain on the land. -- The LORD (Jesus) is His name.

7 Are you not like the people of Ethiopia to Me, O children of Israel? says the LORD (Jesus). Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt, The Philistines from Caphtor, And the Syrians from Kir?

8 Behold, the eyes of the LORD (Jesus) GOD (Elohim-The Family of God) are on the sinful kingdom, And I will destroy it from the face of the earth; Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, Says the LORD (Jesus).

9 For I have commanded that Israel be persecuted by the other nations as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet not one true kernel will be lost.

10 All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword, Who say, 'The calamity shall not overtake nor confront us.'

11 In that day I will restore the fallen kingdom of David. It is now like a house in ruins, but I will rebuild its walls and restore its former glory.
tabernacle of David--not "the house of David," which is used of his affairs when prospering ( 2 Samuel 3:1 ), but the tent or booth, expressing the low condition to which his kingdom and family had fallen in Amos' time, and subsequently at the Babylonian captivity before the restoration; and secondarily, in the last days preceding Israel's restoration under Messiah, the antitype to David ( Psalms 102:13 Psalms 102:14 , Jeremiah 30:9 , Ezekiel 34:24 , 37:24 ; ( Ephesians 2:20 ). The restoration under Zerubbabel can only be a partial, temporary fulfilment; for it did not include Israel, which nation is the main subject of Amos prophecies, but only Judah; also Zerubbabel's kingdom was not independent and settled; also all the prophets end their prophecies with Messiah, whose advent is the cure of all previous disorders. "Tabernacle" is appropriate to Him, as His human nature is the tabernacle which He assumed in becoming Immanuel, "God with us" ( John 1:14 ). "Dwelt," literally, tabernacled "among us" (compare Revelation 21:3 ). Some understand "the tabernacle of David" as that which David pitched for the ark in Zion, after bringing it from Obed-edom's house. It remained there all his reign for thirty years, till the temple of Solomon was built, whereas the "tabernacle of the congregation" remained at Gibeon ( 2 Chronicles 1:3 ), where the priests ministered in sacrifices ( 1 Chronicles 16:39 ). Song and praise was the service of David's attendants before the ark (Asaph, &c.): a type of the gospel separation between the sacrificial service (Messiah's priesthood now in heaven) and the access of believers on earth to the presence of God, apart from the former (compare 2 Samuel 6:12-17 1 Chronicles 16:37-39 2 Chronicles 1:3 ). (Jamieson)

12 That they[Israel] may possess the remnant of Edom, And all the Gentiles who are called by My name, Says the LORD (Jesus) who does this thing.
which are called by my name--that is, who belong to Me, whom I claim as Mine ( Psalms 2:8 ); in the purposes of electing grace, God terms them already called by His name. Compare the title, "the children," applied by anticipation, Hebrews 2:14 . Hence as an act of sovereign grace, fulfilling His promise, it is spoken of God. Proclaim His title as sovereign, "the Lord that doeth this" ("all these things," Acts 15:17 , namely, all these and such like acts of sovereign love).(Jamieson)

13 Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD (Jesus), when the grain and grapes will grow faster than they can be harvested. Then the terraced vineyards on the hills of Israel will drip with sweet wine!
Such shall be the abundance that the harvest and vintage can hardly be gathered before the time for preparing for the next crop shall come. Instead of the greater part of the year being spent in war, the whole shall be spent in sowing and reaping the fruits of earth. Compare Isaiah 65:21-23 , as to the same period.

14 I will bring my exiled people of Israel back from distant lands, and they will rebuild their ruined cities and live in them again. They will plant vineyards and gardens; they will eat their crops and drink their wine.

15 I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be pulled up From the land I have given them, Says the LORD (Jesus) your GOD (Elohim-The Family of God).
